বাংলাদেশের মেগা প্রকল্পসমূহ
Padma Bridge / পদ্ম নেতু:
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, commonly referred to as the Padma Bridge, stands as a two-level road-rail bridge spanning the Padma River, the principal distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh. This bridge holds the distinction of being the longest in Bangladesh, as well as the longest over the river Ganges in terms of both span and overall length. Notably, it boasts the deepest pile depth of any bridge globally, reaching 127 meters (417 feet). The construction of the Padma Bridge posed significant challenges, primarily attributed to the expansive width and depth of the Padma River.
The total expenditure for the construction of the bridge through domestic financing reached Tk.30,193 crore. In this financial endeavor, the government contributed a grant of Tk.300 crore, while the remaining Tk.29,893 crore was extended as a loan with a minimal 1% annual interest rate, as per statements from officials in the Bridge Division.
Metro Rail / ঢাকা মেট্রোরেল :
Dhaka Metro Rail, also known as Dhaka Metro, functions as a mass rapid transit system in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. The operation and ownership of this system are overseen by the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited. Spanning a distance of 20.1 kilometers, the metro rail line traverses Uttara Phase-3 and the Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel, passing through key locations such as Uttara North, Uttara Center, Pallabi, Mirpur Circle-10, RokeyaSarani, Khamarbari, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre, Doyel Chatwar, and Jatiya Press Club.
Notably, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) played a pivotal role by contributing approximately Taka 16,600 crore in project assistance, accounting for a significant portion of the overall project cost of Taka 22,000 crore.
Dhaka Elevated Expressway:
The Dhaka Elevated Expressway spans a length of 12 km, connecting the Airport to the Farmgate section. Notably, it stands as Bangladesh’s inaugural elevated expressway project, facilitating a link between Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Kutubkhali via key locations such as Kawla, Kuril, Banani, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Kamalapur, Sayedabad, and Jatrabari in Dhaka. The implementation of this project has played a pivotal role in alleviating traffic congestion in Dhaka, leading to a reduction in travel time and costs.
The primary elevated expressway itself stretches over 19.73 km, with the entire project encompassing a total length of 27 km, featuring 31 ramps for boarding and alighting. When considering both the main expressway and ramps, the comprehensive length of the elevated expressway amounts to 46.73 km.
Remarkably, the construction of this 20 km expressway has been accomplished through a public-private partnership, with a total expenditure of Tk 8940 crores. Out of this amount, Tk 2413 crores were borne by the government. The completion of the project is structured in three phases, contributing to the overall enhancement of transportation infrastructure in the region.
Terminal / থার্ড টার্মিনাল:
The comprehensive cost estimate for the entire project is Tk. 21,398 crore (US$2.0 billion). The design of the terminal building was entrusted to Singaporean architect Rohani Baharin, and the construction of the new third terminal at the airport is slated for completion by May 2024.
Encompassing a vast area of 542,000 square meters, the third terminal is equipped with aprons capable of simultaneously accommodating up to 37 aircraft. The terminal building itself spans an impressive 230,000 square meters and incorporates cutting-edge technologies sourced from around the world.
Significantly, the terminal will feature a rapid exit and connecting taxiway, along with a main road adjacent to Le Meridien Hotel for convenient access to the airport. Future plans include the construction of a subway linking the Dhaka Elevated Expressway to the airport, further diversifying transportation options for travelers. The project received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in October 2017.
The inception of the third terminal initiative dates back to 2015, marked by the presentation of a feasibility study report to the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recognizing the project’s importance, directed authorities to expedite its implementation. Upon its completion, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will boast the capacity to handle 0.8 million passengers and 0.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Bangabandhu Tunnel:
The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, commonly known as the Bangabandhu Tunnel, is an underwater expressway tunnel situated in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh, passing beneath the Karnaphuli River. The entire route spans a length of 9.39 kilometers (5.83 mi), with the tunnel itself contributing 3.32 kilometers (2.06 mi) to the overall distance. The tunnel boasts a diameter of 10.80 meters (35.4 ft), and it is anticipated that over 17,000 vehicles will utilize this tunnel daily.
The estimated cost of the project stands at US$1.1 billion, with approximately half of the financing being provided by the Exim Bank of China. Notably, the Karnaphuli Tunnel represents a significant milestone as the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia. Its implementation is expected to enhance the connectivity of the Dhaka—Chittagong—Cox’s Bazar highway network, facilitating improved transportation between these key locations.

১. মেগা প্রকল্প বা প্রোজেক্ট আসলে কাকে বলে?
উত্তরঃ মেগা প্রজেক্ট বা মেগাপ্রকল্প হচ্ছে একটি দেশের অত্যন্ত বড় মাপের বিনিয়োগ প্রকল্প। অক্সফোর্ড হ্যান্ডবুক অফ মেগাপ্রজেক্ট ম্যানেজমেন্ট অনুসারে যেই প্রজেক্ট গুলো তৈরি বা নির্মান করতে কয়েক বছর সময় এবং ১ বিলিয়ন বা তার বেশি টাকা খরচ হয়, সেই প্রজেক্টকে মেগা প্রজেক্ট বলে।

২. মেগা প্রকল্প কত প্রকার হয়?
মেগা প্রজেক্ট অনেক ধরনের হয়, উল্লেখযোগ্য হচ্ছে পাওয়ার প্লান্ট, বিমানবন্দর, সেতু, মহাসড়ক, টানেল, সমুদ্রবন্দর, তেল ও প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস উত্তোলন প্রকল্প, তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি ব্যবস্থা, মহাকাশ প্রকল্প, অস্ত্র ব্যবস্থা, পারমাণবিক বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র ইত্যাদি। মেগাপ্রজেক্টে বা প্রকল্পগুলোর মধ্যে বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণা বিষয় এবং অবকাঠামোতে বড় আকারের উদ্যোগগুলিও অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা যেতে পারে। যেমন মানব জিনোমের সিকোয়েন্সিং, জেনেটিক্স এবং বায়োটেকনোলজি প্রভৃতি।
